Benjamin Fazio Named Performer of the Week Again

2016 Nov 1

For the third time this season, this one coming on the heals of a win at the Liberty League Championship Meet, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete Benjamin Fazio of East Greenwich 02818 has been selected as the conference's Men's Cross Country Performer of the Week.

A senior captain, Fazio (East Greenwich, RI / East Greenwich) broke away from a pack late in the race to win on the 8,000-meter course in 25:22.5, good for a four-second victory, to lead the Engineers to their first outright Liberty League men's cross country title. Saturday's race, which had 128-participants, was held at Seneca Lake State Park in Geneva, N.Y.

Fazio ran a 5:07 per mile pace to outrun teammate Grant O'Connor (West Hartford, CT / Hall), who finished in second place in 25:26.5 (5:08), and Thomas Caufield, a senior at St. Lawrence University, who was third with a time of 25:33.3 (5:09).

A materials engineering major, Fazio was previously honored on October 3 after winning the 8K Saratoga Invitational in 25:11.3 and October 17 after placing fourth at the Rowan Inter-Regional Border Battle with a time of 23:35.1.

RPI, which is ranked 11th in the nation, returns to Rowan University for the NCAA Atlantic Regional on November 12.
