Benjamin Fazio of RPI Track & Field Earns Weekly Award

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete Benjamin Fazio of East Greenwich 02818 has earned a weekly award from the Liberty League for his outstanding performance in track & field.

At the New York State Collegiate Track Conference (NYSCTC) Championship Meet at St. Lawrence, Fazio (East Greenwich HS), the league's Track Performer of the Week, won the 1000 meters in 2:29.99, defeating 10 others, including the runner-up who crossed in 2:33.11. Fazio also won the mile in a school, meet and facility record time of 4:10.24, with a 58.64 in the final 400. He was more than six seconds in front of the runner-up (4:16.84) of the race, which had 14 entrants. For his efforts, the materials engineering major was named the Runner of the Meet while the Engineers captured the team title, defeating 12 other schools with 196.50 points. Fazio, a multiple NCAA Championship Meet qualifier, was also honored on February 13 after he was recognized at the Outstanding Track Performer at the 2017 Liberty League Indoor Track & Field Championship. He helped Rensselaer to first place by winning both the 800 (1:57.41) - by more than three seconds - as well as the mile (4:21.14).
