Joey Lyons of RPI Honored by Liberty League

The Liberty League has announced its weekly award winners from women's soccer and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete Joey Lyons of Harwood 20776 has been named Defensive Performer of the Week after helping the Engineers go unbeaten last week.

A sophomore goalkeeper from Harwood, Md., Lyons went 1-0-1 last week, stopping all six shots she faced, including four in a 1-0 win at Smith College on Wednesday. She then had two saves in 110 minutes of a nil-nil draw at SUNY Cortland on Saturday. The clean sheets were her first two of season after recording 11 last year.

Lyons is 2-1-1 on the season with a 0.54 goals against average and an .818 save percentage as the starter in four games. She has two shutouts and one combined shutout, registering nine saves.

A three-time Defensive Performer of the Week last season, Lyons is 16-5-1 with a 0.59 goals against average and an .870 save percentage in 24 career games at Rensselaer. The 2016 Liberty League Rookie of the Year, she has 94 saves and 13 shutouts.

The Engineers (3-2-1) open Liberty League play this weekend, when they host Bard and St. Lawrence on Saturday (3pm) and Sunday (1pm), respectively.
